In IBM’s 2010 CEO Study*, CEOs point to the “rapid escalation of complexity” as the foremost management challenge, and then “identify creativity as the single most important leadership competency for enterprises seeking a path through complexity.”
It’s vital to emphasize that “creativity” is not just about bringing novel ideas onto the table. It’s about actually “
creating” – translating those novel ideas into workable strategies and tactics, and making them a
reality.
And it’s not just product or service innovation – it’s in all parts of the organization. And it applies equally as well in public sector and Not-For-Profit entities.
The other theme gaining momentum in the workplace is the power of – and need for – greater collaboration. The speed, scope, and complexity of business decisions is making it increasingly difficult for leaders to act in isolation. Interdependencies are growing exponentially. And it’s the way our next generation of leaders have learned to act. This means that success requires the open and positive collaboration of diverse talents.
The leadership challenge is in unleashing and then harnessing the creative talent in the organization, and then apply it onto the knotty, complex problems we face. Where you apply that talent is different for every organization. How you go about unleashing and harnessing the talent can at least be initiated in the same way for everyone.
